Donatekart’s Mission: Reviving Lakes, Restoring Nature, One Lake at a Time

In just three months, a neglected, sewage-choked lake near Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta National Park has been transformed into a thriving freshwater ecosystem — thanks to the efforts of Donatekart, a Bengaluru-based social impact startup.

The restoration of Wadene Kere Lake marks a significant milestone in Donatekart’s journey — from providing rapid disaster relief to now actively building climate resilience through ecological restoration.

“This isn’t just about rebuilding a lake; it’s about restoring balance,” said Sarang Bobade, co-founder and CEO of Donatekart. The initiative brought together CSR partner Lumen Technologies India, the Wildlife Conservation Group, local panchayat members, water experts, and the surrounding community — creating a powerful collaboration for change.

Here’s what changed:

  • Lake depth increased from 4 feet to 10 feet

  • Water-holding capacity grew by 200%

  • Over 500 native plants were planted

  • The lake became home to 83 species of migratory birds

  • Even two crocodiles returned, with a special island created for them

This transformation is more than ecological — it’s symbolic. It highlights the urgent need to reverse the damage caused by unchecked urban development, especially in a city like Bengaluru, where only 100 of its original 1,400 lakes remain functional.

“We’re on a mission to restore our water bodies, revive lost ecosystems, and bring people together — one lake at a time,” Bobade affirmed.

As the climate crisis deepens, such grassroots efforts provide hope — not just for lakes, but for the future of our cities and communities.
